Last time, we covered whether book trailers actually sell books. I showed you one of my favorite videos and you were able to draw your own conclusions.

Now I’d like you to try drawing someone else’s conclusions. If you succeed, let me know.

While you’re drawing, let’s get to the main course of this meal.

What Makes a Good Book Trailer?

The purpose of the book trailer is to have the viewer declare either, “Good heavens! I want to get that book!” or at least, “Good Heavens! I want to find out more!”

Either way, they should be declaring “Good heavens!” or “My word!” or “Holy mackerel!” or “Wow!” or “Blast my shorts!” or “Draw my conclusions!” or some sort of interjection, preferably accompanied by an expletive.

They will shout, laugh, or cry based off of the experience the book trailer gives them.

The trick is that the viewer must have an experience similar to the experience the reader will have when reading to the book.

Why?

Here The Part That’s So Important it Deserves its Own Header

Because a good book trailer is a promise of an experience.

Back to the Regular Text

Credit goes to my wife, Beth, for coming up with the great summary phrase of what a good book trailer is for.

In the lion video, we experienced tears of joy (okay, I experienced tears of joy) seeing the lion rejoice in seeing his friends from cub-hood. If the video were a book trailer, we would buy the book (okay, I would buy the book) holding on to the promise of reliving those tears of joy.

So, here’s what I’d like you to do. Watch the book trailer below. After watching it, come back to my site and answer the following question in the comments box.

Did the book trailer make you want to buy or learn more about the book? Why or why not? Draw your own conclusions with a number 2 pencil.

Next time, we’ll go over how to making your book trailer recreate the experience of your book!
